Driving into Myrtle Beach on Highway 501 you can’t help but notice the tall blue draw bridge reaching skyward just before you cross The Intracoastal Waterway. Did you know the bridge has been there since 1937? Yes that’s right, the drawbridge has been part of The Grand Strand landscape for over 80 years. It’s officially known as The Pine Island Drawbridge because it spans the “Pine Island” cut of The Inracoastal Waterway near a local community with the same name.

If you take a drive down the Garden City Peninsula you can catch a glimpse of a rare example of late 20th century modern architecture. Known by locals as the UFO house or The Flying Saucer House, it created quite the commotion when it was first built.Many considered it to be a futuristic oddity. Surrounded by traditional 50’s and 60’s beach cottages, it really did look out of place and out of time.
